DIRECTOR OF INSTRUCTION - DAN MCGINNIS

After graduating from the Professional Golf Management program at Ferris State University, I spent 8 years at The Polo Fields Golf & Country Club in Ann Arbor. In 2004 I made a move to Grosse Pointe and spent another 8 years at the prestigious Country Club of Detroit. In 2012 I moved to Northern Michigan and worked at The Quest Golf Club in Houghton Lake and Cedar River at Shanty Creek Resort before starting at Sugar Springs in 2023. Over that time, I have worked with all levels of golfers from juniors and beginners to collegiate players and aspiring tour professionals.

Swing Philosophy

I believe that the golf swing, while unique to each player, needs to be kept as simple as possible. It is my goal to help my students get into the five key positions to a successful golf swing.

  • Set up
  • Backswing
  • Forward swing
  • Impact
  • Finish

With correct positions and perfect timing, the golf swing can seem an effortless task to perform.

Dan – we really enjoyed taking lessons with you. You are a very good teacher – very patient and you make learning fun! I will try to use the tips you gave us and hopefully will improve my game so that I can beat my husband on a real golf course (unlike the smaller courses in the Villages). Thanks again and have a great weekend!

(On her son qualifying to participate in the Putt, Chip, and Drive competition at Augusta, GA). Coalt is so excited and we are so proud.  He won all three MI competitions (by ten or more points). He is learning to be a fierce competitor.   Please take credit for this as you played a huge part in the win!  Thank you.

Thank you so much Dan.  I loved working with you today and you really helped me with my swing.  I cannot wait to get out on the course before the snow flies and work on what we discussed. All the best to you.

Thanks for the lesson and the nice follow up notes! Your instructions were clear and easy to follow… I’ll practice the set up and be back for help on short irons… Oh- and then there is always putting! 🙂

I appreciate you as my “swing doctor.” You have the wonderful quality so important for good teaching; a positive attitude and the ability to explain what needs to happen. Having the brain involved helps in developing confidence. As we all know, the mental aspect of any endeavor is more than half the battle. Keep up the good work!!!
